The world-famous bullet trains!


We happened to be in Kyoto during the Gion Festival which celebrates the beginning of summer. The people of Kyoto build giant floats (6-7 stories tall)...


A familiar sight near the tourist attractions throughout Kyoto...


...and process through the streets of
Kyoto in a grand parade. It was
truly an amazing sight!



Nijo Castle, built in 1603, was the official Kyoto residence
of the first Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu.

The very colorful Heian Shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate
the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the capital, Kyoto.



Joel at the Chion-in Temple. Notice that he is walking around in his socks! You must take off your shoes when walking on the wooden floors of the temples.
